The fruits of my labour...

Just to share a few screen shots of what I have been working on...
(and would also like to add that in the time I have been here (a few weeks) have become competent with two new programmes iMovie and iPages in order to create the DVD and magazine)...

Show me the way back to Essex...

       OR

So amidst the constant job hunting, I have just decided to give 'Made In Chelsea' a whack (in the bath might I add) and it is everything I expected it to be - shit.

For those of you who don't know what I'm referring to, TV's latest reality hype is to shove cameras into affluent social groups and follow their 'day to day' activities... however the transparency of the staged situations is what has made it so successful.

Although the characters in 'The Only Way is Essex' have non-existant IQ's, orange skin and wear platforms to go camping, they are bloody entertaining, and pretty much just smell of REEM!

HOWEVER, I will probably continue to watch the large headed, stuck up, non-Topshop loving Toff's in Chelsea for the duration of my unemployment. And I look forward to seeing the Newcastle and Liverpool versions too - I just hope the snowball doesn't keep rolling until every town has it's own programme!

End of an era :'(

Ahoy there!

I've just emerged from the pile of books which are contributing to my most final piece of work on my journalism degree (that's a lie... I have spent the whole day cleaning, dying hair and eBaying in order to avoid it, and am now creating a blog to postpone it even further) however I wanted to reflect on my feelings as the last 2 months in my Liverpudlian student home hurriedly disappear day by day...

On Saturday (3 sleeps from now) I shall be attending my Graduation Ball, along with my beautiful housemates, Amy Claire and Dre whom have really become great friends throughout our three years of learning about how to tell stories (journalism) and I honestly believe they will remain life-long friends. My first 2 years certainly did not go so swimmingly for a University student, and I didn't appreciate the whole experience until I landed here... at Garmoyle Road!

Yes, I just hopped over the road in my slippers, mid-blog, with passers-by wondering what the freak I'm doing, and risking the local scallies swiping my iPhone from my bare hands. So please appreciate the effort of this blog.

Anyway, it is within the walls of this modest, distressed, typical student home that I have flourished and really grown into my own skin. If pictures could have sounds and scents attached to them, here would be a few: (I understand that these may be appreciated more by the people they involve, nevertheless...)

  • Any Whitney ballad...
  • "Dre we're leaving"
  • Fried chicken with Nando's sauce
  • Menthol roll ups
  • Many a kind of alcoholic beverage...
  • Strong strong oven cleaner
  • Hairspray, perfumes & other girly smells
  • Hysterical laughter :D
I am so sad to be leaving what I regard as such a memorable and poignant part of my life, but at least a certain social networking site has allowed me to log all the memories with many a photo. Such as ...

To the girls: I wish you all the greatest success in life, and thank you for giving me one of the best years of my life.  I'll miss living with you all so much...
Dre - your slow hilarious comments and pearls of wisdom
Claire - your caring nature and dating mishaps
Amy - your incredible impressions and beautiful shower singing
Dani - your limited eating habits and our funny little chats

So now back to the essay, and after handing it in, 2 months of solid partying before entering the real world!!!

Filmed it... Edited it... Handed it in...

Since I last blogged about my documentary a lot has happened my dear friends! Shortly after my last blog about 'fighting my way to a documentary' i received a text of Mark to say filming in the school was not going to be possible. absolute nightmare. I had no idea what I was going to do a few weeks before my deadline. I felt hopeless. documentary-less. degree-less!

But after consultations with my lecturer and then speaking with Mark again, I found out he had started teaching in a disabled school in Crewe, which I saw as a better story. So asked him to see if I would be able to go and film there with him.

It all turned out to be a success, after a number of nail-biting days! I also filmed in Mark's boxing club 'Team Chongi'.... this is the product of my efforts....

OMG...

I'm beginning to put the Paul McKenna 'wishful thinking' into practice, whereby if I constantly think about how much I want this dress...
for my Graduation Ball for the next month, then hopefully the 100 pound note I require for it, will appear in my lap ASAP.

Never in my life have I been so in love with a garment (But if you are listening God... not the shoes)

I wish... I wish... I wish... <3

Doin' it for the girls...

I read a fashion piece yesterday, which when summarised, pretty much said that women either dress to please the eyes of men or women. I don't mean in a lesbiany sense either. Take for example.... SJP

A style icon...  to women! But Men just think she's slightly bizarre. And the likes of Alexa Chung also conform to quirky vintage fashion. Whereas women like... Jordan
definitely dress to tantalize the eyes of the stag!

Personally I prefer to dress in a way that re-enforces my inner 'girl-power', I genuinely feel more satisfied by a female compliment as it's not likely to be generated by the amount of breast/leg/ass they can see!

So big up the funky jumpsuits, Sherlock capes and slouchy Ugg boots!

It's a small small world...

...after all....

I was just bowled over as the significance of the ever-loved Facebook in today's society, was put into perspective for me!

I check my Hotmail daily, and due to the copious amounts of spam, mostly from the previously mentioned social networking sight, I usually highlight the lot and hit the delete button. But this morning an email from a woman headed 'what a coincidence' caught my eye.

Bizarrely enough, she had obtained my email through Facebook after finding my mum and uncle on there, who she knew when she was in school. My mum was best friends with her sister, and she had noticed on my profile that it said I was studying journalism.

She happens to be a Journalism Lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia ! And was a broadcast journalist for over 20 years both there and in the UK.

It just goes to show the efficiency of Facebook, and how that we would never of obtained contact with this person without it. Although the site poses many flaws in relation to bullying, crime, and relationships ... it is actually a revolutionary attribute to our generation!!

Loving...

Chris Moyles & Dave Vitty 's efforts for Comic Relief 2011 with the Longest Show Ever!

I've just woken up and started listening to them online, and they have already been airing for almost 28 hours and raised an amazing £485,084!

I know that I'd be one Moody Meg if I had been awake that long, let alone non-stop waffling to the nation!

I think Chris is a brilliant radio presenter and have massive respect for the huge following he has acquired through the years! Definitely not biased from the 'fit' comment he made when I met him... haha!
SNUGS!

But I do admire they Radio One team for their passion to raise so much money, and I'll definitely be chucking a few of my valuable student pounds into Comic Relief, whether it be online or into a bucket in Asda. And I urge you all to do the same!

After watching the documentary "Famous Rich and in the Slums" on BBC 1 the other day and witnessing Lenny Henry, who has visited Africa numerous times before, get so emotionally involved with what poverty does to people's lives out there, it hit me how worth while this cause is.

Whether it's sacrificing your daily cigarettes or not putting the lottery on this week, I think everyone could find something to give.

FAG OFF!

Ludicrousy. Is the only word I can use to describe the new laws about banning cigarette displays in shops.

If you're unsure about what I am referring to Click Here

If for one second these morons think that people's urge to smoke will be discouraged because they can't physically 'see' the packet of cigarettes then they need checking into a psychiatric ward.

Let people smoke. The government put us through numerous spending cuts, credit crunches, tax increases and then expect people to give up their only stress release in life. If only Mr. Orwell was around to witness his predications coming true.

My nan gets my grandad to go and buy her cigarettes, so she doesn't even witness the displays anyway. Has she given up? NO. Will she ever? NO.

Can't wait for....

This time next week.

Why?

Because I can put down my dissertation for the night and live like Amy Winehouse. Literally. Maybe without the crack & smack.

Oh Yes my fellow bloggers. Next Thursday my housemates and I will be celebrating 21 years of Miss Danielle Cook...
And in true student-style, we will all be dressing as (fucked up) celebrities. I already have my wig...
And Amy has her costume...
(YES SHE IS GOING TO FREEZE)

I'll upload y'all a photo from it. Love x

'Fighting' my way to a good documentary

Things are looking up.
Met Mark at a gym in Crewe yesterday. He was 20 minutes late, but it gave me a chance to chillax and drink some weak nasty tea. It was a more brief meeting than I first anticipated, but I appear to have a sieve-like brain where I just forget everything I need to say. Especially when there's a huge muscly boxer sat opposite me.

Outcome - have arranged two meetings to film with him. One being in a school which he does his kickstart programme in (hopefully, just got to get the go-ahead from the teacher). Pretty happy about this because it was the story angle which the commissioners were more keen on. And the other at his own boxing club where I can get his personal interview as well.

Still unsure whether I talk about his acting career as the commissioners weren't interested in it, but I think it's quite a quirky little fact to add.
Mark played Chongi in 'Dead Mans Cards'

Slightly intimidating...

Just found this YouTube clip of Mark Russell, let's hope I don't make him angry otherwise I could end up blonde mincemeat...

Here's a link to his website as well if you want to check him out...
Mark Russell

Documentary Proposal

So I've just come out of my commissioning proposal with:
  • Sarah Murch, former head of ITV Granada documentaries, now of Blakeway TV, one of the biggest producers of factual programming in Britain
  • Sol Papadopulos, head of Hurricane Films
  • Camilla Affleck, journalist, experienced documentary maker and member of Liverpool Screen School staff
And received feedback on my documentary... A Fighter's Story
I went in completely nervous seeing as most other people are doing doc's centred on news stories such as cot death and homophobic attacks, but I have taken the profile route. The 3 commissioners were completely lovely but I'm still unsure on my own idea as I'm not entirely sure whether it's going to work in the way that I want it to.

This is Mark Russell...

He is 3 times heavyweight champion of the world in Thai boxing and has featured in award winning films. I met him on my work experience in Crewe as he was running a six week kickboxing program in schools around the area with children who are not keen in P.E. and struggle to focus. I thought this guy would make a really interesting documentary to understand his life story and how he came from a rough area in Manchester to being a world champion and now teaching children and helping them to focus.

The general feedback was to not focus it on him as a person, but to focus it on the children he is now helping, and the difference he is making in the community. I'm still slightly reserved in the sense of not actually knowing too much about what he does, and whether I'm going to get the access to the schools. But I do have a meeting with him tomorrow where I hope to find out more about what I can film and do with the project as I am slightly pushed for time as it is due in on 20th April.

I was happy that the commissioners said I had produced one of the best looking proposals. And although Sarah Murch said she had googled Mark Russell prior to the meeting and felt like she didn't really understand the essence of the story, she then completely changed her mind after hearing the passion I had about how he was making a difference with children, which is a big issue in society today, and youngsters are becoming more involved in the wrong sort of fighting i.e. guns, knives etc. Sol was keen for me to see the development in the children, and maybe get interviews with pupils who have really been changed by his programme.

The proposal has definitely given me food for thought, and I'll keep you updated after my meeting with Mark himself tomorrow.

To all my sisters....

In special dedication to my Rugby girls, I would like to get all mushy with you guys and share the love that I have for these dear friends of mine!

This nice random scatter of photos just illustrates a smidgen of the good times I have had with these girls. On first joining Rugby High, I was worried I was going to become a lesbian and hate it because of it's one gender nature. But after bonding with Jocelyn (the most beautiful ginger girl  woman in this world, inside and out) on the first day over our surname, I began to see it wasn't all so bad.

It saddens me now that we're all dispersed to different parts of the country, but I will always have massive love for this sisterhood, and they will all be at my wedding one day, some as bridesmaids maybe!

They know me so well, and months after not seeing each other, it never changes, and never will. I cherish you all dearly, and you will always make me laugh to tears. Not often will you find people who love you for who you are, and us lot really do. & not a day goes by when I don't smile at their photos on my wall.

I will take the mountain of memories I have acquired with this bunch forever, I could not have asked for a better school life. If I could be back in school tomorrow I would be. And I'm pretty sure it's not Mr.Hartley's latin lessons drawing me back. It's this lot. So wherever you are girls, whatever your doing, remember big love <3

ZUMBA-ing my way to a bikini body...

This was me today...

As the sun begins to show it's face in 2011, the days gradually get a fraction of a degree warmer, and people being to shed their winter coats, I thought it was about time to sign myself up to the local gym.

Me and Claire (my housemate) marched our wobbly bums down to Wavertree Lifestyle Centre in a bid to develop our hot new summer bodies! (I'm jetting off to Crete in June with Todd, and don't want to be put to shame when we strip off on the beach)

So we thought we'd try out the new faze that appears to have taken the nation by storm... ZUMBA! Amongst 120 other similar minded women, Claire and I shimmied and thrusted until we could shimmy and thrust no more! It was actually really fun, and didn't notice I was actually working up a sweat due to laughing hysterically at my lack of co-ordination skills! But we definitely will be going again, and I urge anyone else to try it, the moves are fun and the music is energetic. I left in a really positive mood, and hopefully in 3 months will look like this...

Next on the agenda is 'Legs Bums & Tums' and 'Spinning' ... I'll keep you posted with my progress!

Accredited by the BJTC...

Today was a proud day for myself and a number of fellow students on my TV module.

We were visited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council in order to attain their creditation of our course. And we can now say that it was our work that won it!

At 9 o'clock this morning Joe and I set off on a 45 minute drive to Stockport to obtain the lead story of the day. We interviewed a woman who has just returned from the chaos in Libya. Originally from Zimbabwe, she was a primary school teacher in Libya for 2 years, and told us of the trauma she has experienced in the past couple of weeks in regards to Gaddafi's regime. Click Here to view the original story from the Liverpool Daily Post.

Joe and I were able to turn around the piece for a 3pm deadline, which we were really proud of as this is the sort of deadline journalists work to in the actual broadcast industry.

Other people's stories included a piece about the spending cuts on the emergency services (which I helped get some shots for) and a protest on the spending cuts in Liverpool, and the HMS in Liverpool.

As soon as the video is posted on the JMU journalism website I will post it on here for you all to view.

My TV debut... sort of!

Just thought I'd share this gem with you guys...

This is Louise and I in the audience when we were on work placement at ITV, and Amy is also the other side. We decided to go and use the gift of the gab and sheepishly wandered into the Jeremy Kyle offices to ask if we could go and be in the audience. Paid off though! And was flattered to be told by the man himself that I look like Denise Van Outen, especially as he was attacking most of the audience with remarks like "fatty" and rambling on about his camerawoman's outbreak of Thrush!

After being told it could be shown within 'the next three months' and considering Jezza is on 5 days a week, and I don't watch TV at that time, then thought I wouldn't catch it. But after having a heads up from my uni mates, I was able to go and get a snapshot of me in the Jezza audience. Funny! What we'd do without Sky+ hey!

One man's inspiring strength...

This weekend I watched a film I've been intending to watch for ages. "The boy in striped pyjamas". I've decided to blog about it as it had a real impact on me because of an incredible human being I got the opportunity to meet a couple of months ago, during my work experience at Tonight for ITV. This man...

Polish Jack, is in his 80's, and the only Holocaust survivor of his family. I was fortunate to meet him and hear his tales from the camp he was held in during the second world war. Along with Neil and Chris from ITV, we took Jack and his glamourous wife Rhonda to their favourite cafe for lunch. This was all in aid of research for a programme being made about the Jewish community in North Manchester.

I was genuinely brought to tears when Jack himself wept as he recalled the moment his mother, father and brother were separated from him to be taken to the gas chambers, and sadly have their lives torn from them.

The film shows the holocaust from an innocent child's perspective. Simple imagery of Bruno, 8 years old, questioning the black clouds of smoke bellowing over his Nazi mansion, choked me. The naivety of the two children who befriend through the barbed wire of a concentration camp really puts the sinisterness of what the Holocaust involved into perspective.

The film made me think back to the inspiring words that Jack spoke to me about his life now. Even after such a traumatic experience, Jack fled to England and managed to become a millionaire from making luggage. BUT, even though Jack now has a luxurious home in a wealthy part of Manchester, this means nothing to him. He could not stop praising his beautiful wife and two children. He spoke about British people and their drive for success and wealth and said, "I love British people, of course they saved people like me. But because they have not seen or felt the things that I have then they do not understand. Money is nothing. I have my beautiful family, and this makes me the richest man on the planet".

SO... if you haven't watched it already or even if you have, get down to Blockbuster, order it online, or download it, because this is definitely a film you have to see before you die...

Keeping up with the Bloggingsons

OH DEAR! - pretty much sums up my attitude right now

Sorry it's been so long blogging world, still getting the hang of maintaining a FB, Twitter & Blog, whilst writing a dissertation and final project, not to mention the other modules, and also trying to keep a social life.

So like when Ross wrote the Pros and Cons list about Rachel, I'm going to do it about my life right now (Sorry all you Friends haters):

LOVES IT:

  • my gorgeous boyfriend Todd will always keep me smiling, although I'm pretty sure the girls are getting pretty tiresome of hearing about him around the kitchen table.

  • my wonderful friends and our kitchen convos always keep me smiling (I'll dedicate a special blog to the other 4 beautiful blondes in my life)
  • Got the guy I want to make my 10 minute documentary on to agree YAYY! (celebratory punch in the air)
  • I keep getting told I have lost "shit loads" of weight.. wahey, what woman doesn't love hearing that.
  • I received my bursary yesterday, free money, not complaining!
DOES NOT LOVE IT:
  • I officially have 4 and a half weeks to complete my 8,000 word dissertation on swine flu and moral panic, and have only achieved approx 3,000 words so far
  • I appear to have lost my USB pen drive which has my dissertation on it!!
  • I only have 4 months until graduation date, that means I have to start paying for my car and phone by then... better start applying for jobbys. Oh and I'll also be homeless.
So although I am experiencing unbearable amounts of stress right now, consequently I have more positives in my life right now. And after viewing numerous images such as this....

Then I am counting my blessings. And think we all should be more thankful that the stresses in our student lives, are not compromising our actual humanity, but helping progress it.

First blog, of many to come!

So this is my first blog, and probably should of started it earlier than a few months prior to graduation, but I'd say my life only started getting interesting lately...

I've been inspired by the fact that I am in my third week out of four, on work experience as a journalist, and am starting to actually feel a little professional! I'm in my third and final year as a journalism student at Liverpool John Moores University, and am scared/excited/scared about what my future actually holds.

I've just completed 2 weeks work experience at Tonight, for ITV in Manchester, which was amazing! Highlights including seeing all the Corrie actors in the canteen at lunch and blagging my way into The Jeremy Kyle audience.

Currently I'm into my second day at The Crewe Chronicle, where I was sent straight to report on the Magistrates court after being here 5 minutes yesterday. It's fair to say I was slightly bewildered by the Editor sending me straight on my way, bearing in mind I have only been to court once, seeing as I specialise in broadcast journalism. But I grasped the opportunity with both hands, and persevered waiting around for 5 hours to see when an unemployed, half-cut football hooligan was going to have his case heard. But my efforts paid off, and these are the fruits of my labour...

http://www.crewechronicle.co.uk/crewe-news/local-crewe-news/2011/01/17/football-ground-ban-for-vale-fan-who-invaded-pitch-96135-28002147/

I'm slightly overwhelmed by all the things I want to blog, so rather than splurge all my thoughts into one big dull monstasity now, I'll write seperate blogs.

Over and out.
